When people describe an air conditioning problem to us, they are very often describing an air handler problem. The air handler is the indoor half of a split system — the blower that moves the air, the evaporator coil that takes the heat out of it, and the filter rack. The condenser outside gets the attention, but the indoor unit is where most of the service calls actually land.

It is also the part of your system that spends a Florida summer permanently wet. Warm humid air meets a cold coil, water condenses, and it all has to drain away cleanly for months on end. That is why air handler problems and the drainage and mold issues we see in ductwork are usually the same story told from different ends.

Common air handler repairs:

• Blower motor or capacitor failure — the system runs but little or no air reaches the vents
• A dirty or iced evaporator coil choking airflow and cooling capacity
• Clogged condensate drains and rusted-through drain pans
• Worn blower wheels and bearings, usually announced by a rattle or squeal
• Damaged or saturated cabinet insulation, which is a common source of musty odours

Repair or replace? Most air handler faults are worth repairing on their own — a capacitor or a blower motor is a straightforward job on a system with years left in it. The decision changes when the coil has failed on an older unit, or when the cabinet itself has corroded.

One thing worth knowing before anyone quotes you a condenser on its own: published efficiency figures apply to matched indoor and outdoor equipment, tested and certified as a pair. Pairing a new high-efficiency condenser with an ageing air handler does not deliver the efficiency on the label, and can shorten the life of the new equipment.
